The Black screen with the grey gear is the disaster recovery screen (hard reset).  If it goes to a red x then the recovery has failed and most likely the receiver is scrap.  It will probably require a tech visit to change out the box.  Disturbing a Uverse receiver while it is updating can and often does end up with this result.
