When I tried to change the channel on the TV, it went straight to static and I can no longer get a picture on any of the channels. It's not my TV so I don't have access to the AT&T help services.

You need to change the channel on you set top box not the TV itself. Your tv needs to be on the same input as it's connected to the uverse set top box. That can be either channel 3, input 1, hdmi, it all just depends on how your tv is set up.
