I'm not sure because you would need some type of way to access the drive from the UI. However, I'm curious if you hooked up a USB cable from STB to your computer if you can pull the recordings off your DVR to your computer.
Anyone toyed with this?

Yea me too, but not sure I have a Baseball game to go to on Sunday. Let me know if you have any success and if I get a chance to test I will definitely post it in the forum.

Yea I need try extract for the USB port, if I get a chance this weekend I will give it a crack. I kind of figured that you wouldn't be able to watch any files from the thumb drive because there is no way to access it from the STB.

The Tech that installed U-verse told me that the USB port can be used to add an external hard drive to the non DVR boxes, making them DVRs as well. I don't have a USB hard drive, perhaps its something one of you may want to check out.

Hmmm, that doesn't sound like something they would allow because it would take away from DVR sales but you never know. I think I have an old USB external drive in my closet, I will try later this week to dig it out and see if I get anything.

I was unable to get it to work from the set top box but I did read some of the phillips dvd players will let you connect an external hard drive.
I have one but I'm not sure if mine supports it but I'm going to try it on my dvd player.

That USB port is locked out. It doesnt really do anything. You cant use it to transfer any data to or from the stb. I once asked a prominent instructor what the purpose of that USB port was since it didnt seem to have a useful function. His reply: “room for improvement.”

I don't think you can do it from the STB. If you figure out anything please post back.

Yea uverse may be great and all but it still has alot of room for improvement lol. Owell when it uverse becomes more widespread maybe the hackers will figure something out but untill them we all can hope and dream!

I have a feeling within the next 5 to 10 years technology will change the way we watch TV, surf the internet, play games, and etc.

Why? They only allow one DVR per installation, don't they? Or is there another way to “skin that cat”?

Couldn't you use a set of the RCA out jacks to feed the signal into a store bought DVR and record unprotected shows there?

The reason they only allow one dvr is because it can record 4 programs at one and you can watch what you recorded on any stb in the house. Only problem is you cannot schedule recording from the stb. And i dont see any reason you could not buy a dvr from the store. It would just be a hassle making it record and keep all the show info straight.

I was looking for a method of controlling the recording function at one of the other three STB locations besides going on-line or via cellphone. That's the feature/restriction that's giving me pause right now.

OK, that sounds like it would work. I'm really not interested in HD anyway, so my family members should be able to live with this. I'm thinking of a Plexto-style converter feeding into a old dedicated desktop PC running W2000 with a humungous hard drive. Any thoughts?
