When I run a HDMI cable from my ATT box tomy new HD TV it won't show an image.  The 5 wire works OK and I get an HD picture, but nothing with the HDMI cable (I tried 3 different cables-none worked).  Any suggestions?

Do you get a picture with a standard cable? Is this problem specific to HDMI? I would try a standard cable or maybe RBG to see if you get the same problem. Also, it maybe trival but makes sure the TV is on the right input.

What do you mean you get a HD picture but nothing with the HDMI? Are you saying HD channels are coming in but not standard def?

Sorry for all the questions just trying to grasp at what might be causing the possible problem.

I already know the answer to this one…

First of all, understand that HDMI is a handshake technology.  That means that the set-top box and the TV communicate on a level below that which you see on the screen.  Also, HDMI is not a standardized technology.  Sony's HDMI is slightly differnt from Toshiba's HDMI which is different from Sanyo's HDMI and so on.  Every Tv manufacturer produces their own approximation of HDMI.  This means that not all set-top boxes will communicate properly with all TV's.

This problem is more pronounced on the Cisco set-top boxes than on the Motorola set-top boxes.  I had the opportunity to talk to a Cisco rep. about this and to be honest only received a promise for an emailed white paper on the subject which I never received.  The only real solution is to try the HDMI cable on another set-top box and TV combination.

In the meantime, HD component cables will show 1080i just as well as the HDMI cable would have, if it had worked.  I run into this sort of thing on a fairly regular basis.

Thanks for taking the time!  Yes I get a picture with a standard cable.  This problem is specific to the HDMI cable. I get a HD picture when I use the RGB cable and yes the tv is set for 1080.  Everything works right using the RGB Cable with the tv but when I try to set it up using a HDMI cable the image is blank. ( The tv menu image works just nothing coming in from the HDMI Cable.)

Very interesting!  I only have one HD TV, maybe I could pull one of the UVerse Motorola boxes out of one of the bedrooms and try it.?>?  You said HD component cables will show 1080i just as well as the HDMI cable would, will it show 1080p?  If I have to use component cable, how would I hook up another device like a blue ray player?  The Mitsubishi TV only has room for 1 set of component cables and 3 places for HDMI cables?

Thanks for your time Dave!

You probably can run your blu-ray via HDMI with no problems.

On another note no provider offers 1080p broadcast, their all 1080i. Now most new tv are cabable of 1080p and blu-ray is in 1080p but all HD channels are broadcasted in 1080i.

For what it's worth….Not correct.

Both Dish and DirecTV now broadcast limited programming in 1080p.
