I know from my reading that technically the USB port is currently "unused" on the UVerse STB's.
HOWEVER, I'm wondering if there is any VOLTAGE present……
With my former employer, their USB was worthless for communication, but it WOULD drive a laptop fan pad. We used to use it to drive a fan pad to keep the electronics cooler, thereby reducing issues with pixelation and audio drops – as well as extending the life of the electronics. Worked wonders in tight A/V cabinets by increasing the air circulation and cooling…..
So does anyone know if the USB port on a UVerse STB / DVR will drive a USB fan?

I don't think we have heard any successful reports the USB port is active. But, let us know if you find otherwise. I tried to connect and external hdd and it didn't work.

I will ask the trainer next week. I am not worried about it being "active" for communication. I just wonder if there is +12VDC or +15VDC on the connector. This would power a fan, and my bet is that there IS voltage present.

I'm pretty sure your right. I plugged my blackberry into it to see if it would charge, it would not but the screen lights up every time I connect it like it recognizes something but not enough juice to charge.

my razor phone will charge on it. I think i may be used when they load the firmware on the boxes. But i have never taken one appart to see if it has a serial port on it or not.

I think this is my answer. I think we can assume that the USB port will drive a cooling fan if it will run a moto razor charger.
BTW, I do doubt they use the port to download OS or firmware. Admittedly, I have not put my hands on a STB yet. But based upon my years in Process and Mfg. Engineering in electronics…….this doesn't make much sense. If they activate communications on the port, it doesn't make sense to me that they would initiate a secondary operation in mfg to de-activate the USB after a software / firmware download. Not cost efficient. The mfg'ers prob. have a functional test bed that downloads OS and firmware to the mommie board / Hard Drive during functional testing.

Yea firmware probably pushes over the network rather than USB. That's cool your razor will charge on the STB, I need to try my wifes moto see if it willl work.

Awesome, I assumed it would work once we found out there is power to it. Probably doesn't take much to power the fans, that's a smart idea for STB's in cabinets.

The usb port is used for the new RF remote control, it uses a usb "dongle" that plugs in and you can then use the remote anywhere in the house.
