I am a potential new Uverse customer and would like for someone to explain the topology (ie, how the wiring is connected

to each STB and the RG… ) .. Please start at the NID .. I know they can use coax or ethernet and I'm told its a 'starred'

arrangement and not a serial arrangement with the RG daisy-chained to each STB ..  but the starred arrangement means

that VDSL2 (coming in from the street) is somehow intermixed with ethernet signals and HPNA signals ….and that doesn't make much sense to me …  thanx…

Ok when the tech comes to your house and does the walk threw to see what is already installed in the houses. Wither it is cat5e or coax all ready there. If it's coax it needs to be rg6 or rg59 will work. From the nid you can have a cat5e or a rg6 fed to the rg. It is better to have a cat5e run. They can go coax but the less conversions you have in the line IE: coax balum, splitters, and diplexer. If the tech can backfeed out of the rg with coax to the other stb's thats fine and dandy or  they can be fed by a cat5e. If there is no wires or they are going to be a problem on the existing iw, i would pull all new cat5e line just for simplicity and reliability of it. Are you getting VOIP server or you going to be keeping your pots line. I think the only place they offer voip is in arkansas.

I currently have a voip phone from voip.com. I assume I can attach the phone adapter to the RG ??

I'm in Raleigh, NC area .. I don't think they offer voip here yet .. I notice the RG has 2 phone ports.. it would

be nice to be able to provision the RG to run my current voip service !!

My house has an On-Q wiring system.. RG6U as well as ethernet runs throughout the house.. What confuses me

is that a friend in another city just had Uverse installed and showed me photos of his RG  (3800hgv) located next to his computer..

There is only ONE COAX line going into the RG as I only see one coax port on the back of the box (near the power

cord input).. the only other port that's wired is an ethernet line to one of his computers… so is there another RG

somewhere in the house that he doesn't know about ? Or maybe an active NID  (INID?) somewhere ?  he couldn't find it

but he's not very technical …

He also has 2 TVs.. one HD and one SD … I don't know where the coax from these 2 STBs originate .. They definitely

don't come out of the RG as you and everyone else suggest because there is only one coax going to the RG in the

computer location .. I'm really confused now !!!!

Ok how it works is there is three ways to install uverse HPNA over twisted pair not recommended, HPNA over Coax, or threw Ethernet.

HPNA over twisted pair sends the HPNA signal from the rg back over the iw in the house. the tech has to install an pstn filter to filter out the hpna signal, this is mainly used in apartments where limited installation practices are allowed.

HPNA (Home Phone Networking alliance) over coax you install a  coax balum that converts the vdsl signal from twisted pair to coax into an diplexer that has 3 ports vdsl from balum, combined (2 way communication from rg), HPNA to your splitter then to your stb's.

So there is an coax that feeds bidirectional from the rg to allow 2 way up and down communications over one coax.

You can run HPNA over coax, Ethernet at the same time.

Uverse is very versatile.
