For those of us who are looking to get Uverse, can someone who's experienced it explain what installation entails?  I've read the posts and understand it's a long process, but are they running fibre through your house, are they using your existing copper wire, are they putting holes in your walls, digging trenches form the drop at the street to your NID?  What are the physical requirements?  Thanks.

Unless your in a brand new housing addition what they do is run fiber to the curb. Usually a box you see somewhere on the sidewalk. With the fiber so close the can push high bandwith over existing copper wires to your house. Then for TV their either run Cat-5 (ethernet cables) or coaxial into the home. Generally if you house is already wired with coaxial which most hopes they just tie into those existing lines. Coax is great over short distance so it's fine just inside the home. They will also replace any old coax or lower quality coax you might have from preexisting provider. But, if the cables are still good then it doesn't hurt at all for them to use them.

It will probably feel just like getting cable or satelite installed just different technology from the outside the house.

Thanks for providing the details of your install.

It definitely can be different pending on where you live.

There are one of 2 types of connections to the house FTTP (fiber to the prem or premises) and Fttn (fiber to the node) depending on which you have will impact the install time greatly, FTTP is a quick simple install theres fiber right to the NID on the side of your house and usually if theres FTTP then theres a central box somewhere in the house.FTTN is fiber to the VRAD somewhere close to another big box in your neighborhood. In all cases we try to use existing wiring in the prem, but dont worry all copper and coax is thoroughly tested before we install anything. The battery backup that zapp was refering to is only installed when you have CVOIP as part of your order, this will give you up to 4 hours of telephene service in the event of a power outage. My typical install will run anywhere from 2 hours to all day depending on if any order changes were made (dropping voip or HD ,adding voip or hd to an already completed order)this can increase an install by up to 4-6 hours.Hope this answers a few of your questions.

Perhaps I am just missing something, but everywhere I look, everyone just refers to the wires running to your house as "copper". Well, this is a little vague for me since I'm trying to understand this entire process in detail (is it co-axial, phone line, etc. or can it be any type of wire?).

Also, in order to get U-verse, do we have to be paying for a landline or is it a separate system? We'd like to get rid of our landline and use vonage to save some money, but so far (on other forums), nobody's been able to answer that question.

Thank you,

Brad

"Copper" is referring to your phone line, buried or aerial that runs to your house. Unless you have fiber to the side of your house (FTTN), the signal is fed to a local junction box somewhere near your home (usually within about .5 miles). The signal travels to that box (called a VRAD) via Fiber Optics. From there, it is sent over the exsiting copper telephone wire to your home.

You do not need to have existing phone service w/ AT&T, the service is still installed over your existing copper phone line, but it is installed over what is referred to as a "dry pair", meaning there is no dial tone on the line.

With U-verse unless your in a new neighborhood that had no pre-existing copper the wire to your house is copper. The wire to the Vrad (box on sidewalk in neighborhood) is fiber, which is standard. So from the VRAD to your home the push the service over a copper pair and then at the NID convert the cable to either existing coaxial or CAT-5.

Since this is a dry pair meaning it does not have dial tone you can have service with/out tradditional phone serivice. However, U-verse is launching U-verse voice which is their VOIP service much like Vonage. Or you can choice any VOIP provider you like and you don't have to have ATT voice.

Thank you very much. That's exactly what I needed to know.

Now, then I've got another question, but it probably pertains more towards the vonage forums, but you might know the answer.

With regular DSL that requires an active phone line, you have to put the one incoming line onto one of the sets of phone lines that runs throughout your house and the vonage adapter (as well as all the phones in your house) on a second line so that the voltage that the phone company sends over the lines to power corded phones doesn't fry the vonage adapter. Any idea if there is a similar voltage level that they send for U-verse or is it powered solely by the gateway?

Thank you,

Brad

Not on the gateway because you plug your vongage box into an ethernet port, but if they don't disconnect your old nid it might be a good idea to remove the connection at your old nid that feeds the signal back to the phone company that way if you hook your regular phone line into one of your house jacks it will make all the jacks live in the house with dial tone. If you just care about 1 then don't have to worry because you hook 1 phone directly to the vonage box (which is very doable if you have wireless set).

We hope to have an installation done in a week or two–but there are a couple of things I a want to be sure of.

My house has some old coax cable coming in from a previous cable installation. It hasn't been used in years–I assume that it will be replaced with new, and that the coax will have to run to each TV/Uverse box as well as the internet gateway/router box.

I really hope to avoid having cables running across the outside of my house and in through holes through the side if possible–is it possible? I could provide pull ropes through the walls if the install tech doesn't want to deal with fishing wires through the walls, but I want to make sure that I know what cables/wire runs will need to be.

Will cat 5 cable also need to be run to each Uverse box and to the DVR?

What are the dimensions of the DVR and the Uverse TV box?

It can either be installed with coax or cat-5 but I think more commonly they use coax since it's more or less the standard. If the coax is not usable then they will have to replace it and if it's as old as you say I would urge them to. As far as going into the house it really depends on the design of the home I guess. If you can think of something ahead of time and suggest it to the tech it might make it easier for them to find an alternative solution.

Hope it goes well.

Just ordered

Guest

UverseGuy, I just ordered the triple package(Cable, Inet, and VOiP). I want to pre run cat 5 to each room, one drop for cable and one for Inet. Does this setup make sense and are there any other connection Ishould worry about?

Thanks in advance!

A lot of times they run the video off coaxial instead of cat-5 because it's already in the home. But, I don't see any issue with you running cat-5 if you want to network hard wired internet connections through your home. Most people will put a switch in the closet and have the RG installed there.

With uverse orders i would recommend that you prewire you house with some good quality cat5e cables and good jacks just for ease of install. When the tech arrives show the what you have and the it perty much plug and play.

Just to clear up some issues that I run into which is very aggravating is customers that where there neighbors are getting it but they cannot. 99% of the time is loop length issues. The signal comes in 2 ways like what premtechey said above FTTX and FTTP. The speed is 25mb or 19mb profiles, Regardless of FTTP or FTTX On fttx the signal comes over the phone cables from the vrad (video ready access device) to your house. depending on that gage wire is in place, will determine your distance. In theory on 19 gage wire it will travel 4000ft on a 25 mb profile but in 90% of the wire in the ground is smaller gage to it will limit the distance to about 1600 to 2000ft on the 25mb profile and if you are beyond the mark they will attempt to drop you to the 19mb profile in an effort to get you signal strong enough to supply quality uverse experience. Also if you dont know the 25 mb profile allows to you view up to 2 hd and 2 sd or 4 sd streams at once. the 19 mb profile allows you to view 1 hd and 3 sd or 4 sd streams at one time.
