Ok…here's my rant about AT&T U-Verse…
I currently have DSL Extreme as my DSL provider and would like to transfer over to U-Verse. So I called AT&T and they told me to go ahead and cancel my dsl 3 weeks in advance so they could schedule the installation on the same day as the cancellation date. GREAT! So i schedule my DSL Extreme cancellation for Oct 1 2008. Then i call AT&T to order U-Verse and was told that they can't complete the order until the physical line was disconnected and there would be a lead time of 5-10 days before they could come out to install it.
This means that i will have no Internet Service for at least 5 days. This is unacceptable to me. Why did they tell me to cancel the DSL service in ADVANCE if they have to wait until the line has physically been disconnected from the CO?
So i have had to cancel my cancellation order with DSL extreme and cancel my U-Verse order because i can't be down for 5 days…i've found the whole process to be very frustrating and not worth my time and effort

This doesn't sound like your ordering U-verse versus just plain SBC DSL. Generally when your service works on a phone line a new company can not put line share on the line until the existing provider is off the line and the records are cleared saying it's okay for a new dsl order from another provider. This can be a timely processes and should have been advised to you up front.
However, U-verse is idepentent of the phone line and should not require any dely as metioned above.
Tip: From personal experience working with several providers I have found it best to get the new service installed and confirm it's working before terminating your old service. You may have to pay for two services for a few days but it gives you piece of mind.

I had this issue, I had EarthLink and at least in California they will not allow them to do anything with UVerse DSL until your 3rd party is completely disconnected which I wasn't willing to do. So instead I made the switch from EarthLink aDSL to AT&T aDSL which only took three days. Once I was with AT&T DSL they could plan my install for UVerse (which happens tomorrow). My only DSL downtime was 2 hours (plus whatever happens tomorrow). Its still much better than going weeks without DSL.

Hmmm. I would think you could order Uverse without disconnecting your previous provider until U-verse was installed. But, I could be wrong.

Just so you know when you order uverse and the tech disconnects your wires at the crossbox it kills the vdsl signal from getting threw, and when you get registered online it completely kills all previous dsl signals coming from att.

Yes, which in my opinion is the way to go because if the FT can not get the uverse working then I would have the re-install your old service. However, not sure that happens to often but if your like me I have to internet.

Same problem here. My order was just cancelled because I have a 3rd party DSL and was told that I would have to disconnect it before the U-verse could be ordered, even though my 3rd party DSL provider was willing to disconnect the day before the scheduled U-verse set up. Just not worth the bother.
