Hi,

I just got uverse and have the 3800hgv-b
I want to use my own router and wifi using 802.11a
all my laptops have 11a built-in, and I'm in an area with alot
of 11g

any tips for configuring the rg to deal with this?
I've already tried to connect it once but had trouble. ip issues..
once I got it to work , I'd disable the wifi on the rg

thanks in advance

Anytime connect two routers together the main thing you want to look for is that both the routers don't have the same default IP address. In this case it's unlikely because the RG uses such a unique gateway ip (192.168.1.254).

The easiest way I can see to do this is go into the RG and disable the wireless option and the connect an ethernet cable from one of the ports on the RG (1,2,3,4 – doesn't matter) to your router.

Then configure your wireless network key (wep) in your router and connect the laptops to it.

Shouldn't be too much to it.

Let us know what problems your having if you don't get it, maybe we can fumble through it through the forum.

Thanks for the response,

The problem turned out to be the router, it was configured for dsl PPPoE,
cause it was last used connected to a dsl modem.
Once I set it to dynamic IP, all is well.
The rg dmz'd the router.
Now I'm back at 11a super turbo!

peace

bummer news
the combination of my dlink router and the RG
gives problems.. for some reason after a little while, sometimes just a few minutes, my machines behind the router can no longer access the internet, as if dns is not found or some dhcp problem, I have hard set in the router the primary and secondary dns servers specified in my RG, but what is odd is that I can connect to my http servers from outside my lan.

ok, so I'll give up using my router for awhile, until I have some spare time,
which is a bummer because this router worked flawlessly connected to a dsl modem.

that brings me to my next two problems with this RG

I have three machines on my lan, machines X,Y, and Z

X is wired to the RG and serves as my http servers as well as my media server, Y and Z are wireless and serve as media clients.

when I set X to be dmz'd and have windows firewall on or off..
X can no longer be seen in my windows network workgroup.
but it can be pinged from Y and Z

if X is not dmz'd but with pass through enabled for tcp ports 80,1080, and 8080,
X can be seen in the windows network workgroup and can share files etc..
but, and a big but.. my http servers can't be accessed from outside the net
or located inside my lan via dns, only if I give Y or Z the ip number assigned to X
from the RG. argh!

so for now I have to toggle X from dnz'd to non dnz'd depending on what I need.

why is dmz'd X not allowed to share files on the lan?
is there some hidden setting on the RG to configure this?

Is there any documentation or examples on how to setup the RG to handle
a router behind it?

I haven't had time to call att lvl2 tech…

Putting the RG in DMZ mode should do the trick. I'm not sure why you can't see the other computers once you enter DMZ mode.

have you tried access the other computers going start -> run – > //computer name

That surprisingly worked for me once when I thought the my internal wireless network wasn't working.

The most I have done with RG is connect my main printer to my wife's printer in her office.

*Sigh*

Don't we wish they issued standardized routers with standard options for port forwarding and such.

I have the Big RG, I hear they released a new smaller model but I'm not sure if the firmware is the same.

Best bet is to call Tech and escalate to Level 2.

I am trying to use a router in my bedroom to split the single cat 5 running to the room from the 2wire in the basement. I want to hardline my pc (no wireless card) and still have a connection to the uverse tv box. Any input on how to do this? I am not sure where to start. I am assuming it is as simple as configuring the router in my room.

I'm not sure exactly what your doing here but the best way to split a single cat-5 is to use a switch our router and then connect it to one of the ports. That way you have more ports to work with.

A switch will split the signal without any router configurations.

zipgood, it sounds like you want a long cat5 cable going from the rg to your
pc, no need to split.

Uverse Guy, I'll called both att lvl2 tech and 2wire tech.

found out the 3800hgv-b is the latest and only rg uverse is using in my area now..

2wire tech said when rg has dm'z a pc it will not allow that pc to be seen in the windows workgroup and that there is no way around it.. The configuration of the rg
is very weak, meant for the most novice of users

so for now X is not dmz'd..
and the port forwarding is working

Also I have not found a way to connect to X from Y or Z using dynamic ip name,
only the local ip name works.. I believe this is another feature of the rg, cough…

Now I'm back to trying to get my d-link router to be happy and stable behind it..
for better wifi performance, better firewall, and hopefully being able to use dyn ip
to connect y or z to x…

Please let us know if you find a solution because this RG firmware if very frustrating. Also, your right on the RG it's the only one. I have friend that is a FT and for some reason I thought he had U-verse with a smaller RG. Just turns out he had a 2wire router for a DSL connection. I don't know where I got off thinking he had a smaller RG, I must of had a drink that night. *wink*.

I'm not sure why your not able to connect your computers? Are you able to do things like simple file sharing wirelessly?
