ATT says it is a "software problem" according to their techs, but happens on my pc and laptop and with windows and linux

Are you getting the yellow question mark and a warning that says limited or no connectivity? If so this means your computer is not getting an IP address from the router, you need to check DNS settings make sure it's set to automatic. Try powercycling all equipment as well.
