I just ordered a Uverse bundle last night (phone, tv, internet).  I was told by a coworker today that they believe the cables would be run either up and over my roof, or along the roofline….and then punched through my exterior walls to the various locations.  Also that the cabling might run down the surface of interior walls and along floors.  I don't know what I was thinking.  I imagined they would run things inside the interior walls, but now realize there's no way than can do that without tearing up walls, and having a full day or so installation.

I don't want a bunch of cables running around the outside and inside of my house.  Can anyone confirm how they install?

Thanks

It all depends on how the install will be preformed, and also if the cables that you have aready in place if they can be used, if you have a craw space. or how your attic is.

If you have coax already there I don't see why they can't use it usually. It's really hard to tell because a lot of houses are set up differently. Do you have an attic?

I have coax to three of the four locations, but the signal quality to the living room is not good…and local channels have interference.  Someone said the coax to that location must have some damaged. I think we checked the splitter when we first moved in, and things seemed fine there.

I do have an attic, but it doesn't allow for access to the living room and one of the bedrooms.  Also AT&T said that the installer would run Cat5 to all the locations.  I guess I'll have to wait for the technician to check stuff out.

Thanks for the replies.

Well if it giving you problems now, it will probably bet a real pain later if they use the old cable. get the to pull cat5 everywhere just my thinking and also don't hold your breath on what a salesman/woman tells you, there just there to sell stuff and will tell you what ever to get you to buy it. Just the nature of the business. Have customers ask me all the time when are they going to put the fiber optic to my house, the guy down at the att store said they would. Sorry mam buy a new house in a new neighborhood with 50 or more houses being build and you will get fttp. lol Just the way it goes tho.

That's funny and so true about salesmen.  I did tell the salesman from ATT that I would talk to the installer about his plan on how to run cables when he shows up this Saturday.  If I don't like it I'm going to send him away, and cancel the order.

The installation went fine.  He used the existing lines…and guess what?  I'm having troubles with the two TVs that connect to the coax I thought was bad.  Another tech just came back to try to fix the problem.  He changed the ends, checked the splitters, cut out a section of coax in the attic he thought looked problematic.  He was able to bring the error down from .10+% to .03 – 06%.  If this doesn't work, he'll come back to run an ethernet cable to that area…and use a hub for the two TVs.  I like that idea since he said we can also connect the XBox 360 and PS3 to the hub.

The other two TV locations are working great, and overall AT&T has been great.  Once we get this issue resolved I'll be totally satisfied.

Also note that you their is an ethernet port on the back of the STB you should be able to connect your Xbox 360 and PS3 to just fine.

Premtek, you may be right.

I'll know in few hours.  The tech did not show up for my scheduled Thursday 4:00 – 8:00PM service appointment window.  I made a new appointment for today (Saturday), hopefully he comes out.  Up until this last missed appointment, AT&T has been extremely responsive in their service…sending out techs very quickly.  The second tech would have been there sooner than Thursday if I was available during the week days.  One customer service rep gave me a $50 credit after seeing all the issues in just a few day period.  The guy who came on Sunday said he would have run the new cable then, but he did not have a hub.

I've now spent last Saturday (6hrs), last Sunday (2.5hrs), phones calls in between, waiting Thursday night (4hrs), and now I'm dedicating whatever it takes todoay to get this installed/fixed.  If this isn't resolved today, I'm seriously considering cancelling service.

Uverse Guy, I had asked two installers about the ethernet port on the back of the Motorola box…but both said they recommend that I not use it.  They said that it might cause issues with the box.  Are they being overly cautious?  I was wondering if their boxes are basically junk, and that they are just worried that it will mess up the box's TV capabilities….which would cause them more service calls and lost customers.  I'm willing to try it.  In the last week, I've been booted more times from my online game since switching to Uverse than I had in 6 months total on the regular DSL….and I even increased my upload and download speed from 3.0/0.5 with DSL to 6.0/1.0 with Uverse.  I am now using wireless with the PS3, so I can't tell if it's the new internet service, going wireless, the AT&T gateway…hell I'm confused.

The installer came this Saturday, and even though I asked the rep on the phone to make sure that whoever came out had a hub….the guy that came out did not have a hub.  He tried to leave, telling me that I would have to make yet another service appointment another day so they could send out someone with a hub.  I told him to run the cat5, leave me ethernet cables for each TV location, and that I would go buy a hub, and then finish connecting the boxes.  No way was I going to waste another four hours.  I drilled holes for him in a couple places to make the cat5 cable run a little cleaner.  He ran his cat5, connected it to the gateway, and then left.  I bought a $20 Netgear hub with four ports, and finished connecting the two boxes myself (yes, even I can plug in ethernet cables).

Now everything is running beatifully.  No TVs freezing up.  The XBox 360 and PS3 are also connected to the hub, and now no one is getting booted from games or having bad lag.

They also cleaned up my voice signal….so I think that it's finally a done deal.  Whew!!!

Thanks for your advice, and for letting me vent.

Good i'm glad they got it fixed. Sometime all it takes is to put your foot down and things get done!

Awesome! I agree sometimes you have to put your foot down. I just wish more people would realize the difference between being direct and demoralizing or verbally abusing someone. Seems like the right thing was down here with an outstanding result!
