Well the competition is heating up for AT&T by a new offering that will possibly hit the market by the end of 2007 or the beginning of 2008. CURRENT Group announced a deal with Direct TV the biggest satellite provider to offer broadband and VOIP over powerlines.

This will allow DirecTV to directly compete with cable and telcom companies that are ramping up their triple play offers. Supposable, their broadband service will be as easy as plugging your modem into essentially any of your electrical outlets.

However, I do question the technology and what it will really be capable of doing.

1.) How fast will the internet speeds be?

I’m not sure how much study has been done for BPL but it surely isn’t a very tested technology.

2.) How reliable will the service be? How will VOIP perform?

Basically, will we expect a lot of interference over the electrical lines and how stable will the broadband speeds be? Will we see a flux in down and up speeds? Who knows!

3.) And probably the biggest question is…How much will it COST?

All I can say is their price will have to stay near 100 dollars if they really want to get serious in the triple play market (video, voice, data)!

Any thoughts?
