AT&T news room reported that they have now surpassed 100,000 customers in effort to compete with cable. This is a big number but I still think they have a long way to go before they can be considered a true competitor.

However, they did annouce that we have a few new features coming our way.

* AT&T U-bar, which brings Internet-like content to the television screen in the form of customized weather, stock, traffic and sports information.

* YELLOWPAGES.COM TV, an intuitive new way to search for local businesses and other information using www.yellowpages.com.

* AT&T Yahoo! Games, available on the television screen, including Sudoku, Solitaire, JT’s Blocks, Mah-Jongg Tiles and Chess.

It’s not the MDVR I have been waiting for but at least they are adding things and I’m sure the MDVR will come eventually.

It was also reported that more HD content is coming as well.

In addition to these new features, AT&T U-verse TV will soon launch new content, including more High Definition (HD) channels. This expanded lineup builds on AT&T’s already robust channel offerings. New channels scheduled to be added by the end of this year include Lifetime Movie Network HD, History Channel HD, Animal Planet HD, TBS HD and Versus/The Golf Channel HD.

Well, late the other night I was looking through my On Demand and noticed that now it showed HBO and Cinemax. This was a major surprise because prior this was unavailable in our market. I don’t subscribe to U-400 but U-300 but still could view the two movies packages in the VOD menu, which seemed full of various titles.

I don’t have a lot of details on the new offering but it seems like U-verse is pushing for more On Demand to make the product more marketable.

Let us know if you have subscribe to these packages in other markets like and are able to get these VOD options. As far as where aware of the HBO/Cinemax VOD is only in Texas right now but we may be wrong.

DirectTV partners with CURRENT Group to Offer BPL (Broadband over PowerLines)

Well the competition is heating up for AT&T by a new offering that will possibly hit the market by the end of 2007 or the beginning of 2008. CURRENT Group announced a deal with Direct TV the biggest satellite provider to offer broadband and VOIP over powerlines.

This will allow DirecTV to directly compete with cable and telcom companies that are ramping up their triple play offers. Supposable, their broadband service will be as easy as plugging your modem into essentially any of your electrical outlets.

However, I do question the technology and what it will really be capable of doing.

1.) How fast will the internet speeds be?

I’m not sure how much study has been done for BPL but it surely isn’t a very tested technology.

2.) How reliable will the service be? How will VOIP perform?

Basically, will we expect a lot of interference over the electrical lines and how stable will the broadband speeds be? Will we see a flux in down and up speeds? Who knows!

3.) And probably the biggest question is…How much will it COST?

All I can say is their price will have to stay near 100 dollars if they really want to get serious in the triple play market (video, voice, data)!

Any thoughts?
